Album Notes

"The Debris That Is Me" is a massive outpouring of 87 pieces of pop music by multi-instrumentalist Alec Boehm. Formerly with seminal Los Angeles art-pop band Stay Home, Boehm has packed his first solo LP with witty compositions that run the stylistic gamut from freewheeling pop to wistful love songs to faux World War II movie soundtracks. If you've ever longed to hear a jazz version of "The Funeral March" or heavy-metal renditions of "Take Five" or "Hava Nagila," this is the disc that will make your dreams come true.

Firmly of the belief that pop songs should never overstay their welcome, Boehm keeps most of his to less than two minutes long. "The Debris That Is Me" is a two-record boxed set - one disk with instrumentals, the other with vocals. A third bonus disk, with older and quirkier material, is available for free on request - all you have to do is mail in a post card that comes with the two-record set.

But here's the kicker: three discs, 87 pieces of music, 109 minutes of entertainment, for a mere $12. What have you got to lose?

Sprawling epic tour de force of a pop album

A spawling epic tour de force of a pop album. Smart Alec's style is unique, but clearly influenced by They Might Be Giants, XTC, The Beatles, Oingo Boingo, Randy Newman, and Tom Waits. The songs are catchy, beautifully arranged, with clever lyrics. Smart Alec never takes imself too seriously, which is part of his charm. Stand out tracks include She's Not You (with a guitar riff worthy of George Harrison), Show Me Yours, Hey, You Kids (featuring the ukelele), and New Hope For Small Men. Disc 2 plays like the soundtrack to a film I'd love to see. And, disc 3 is definitley worth sending away for.

Debris is Smart, Creative, Complex and Twisted... oh, and fun.

Thank God! Here is an album that jumps out of the pop box. It's radically fun, beautifully produced and devoid of a mainstream sound. The lyrics offer up some strange outlooks on life which can only be described as mental slapstick. The instrumentals are skillful, creative, complex and twisted. It is a five pound box of evocative and tasty brain candy you can enjoy without guilt for smiling. The only thing "in the box" about this music is what it comes in!
