Album Notes
Guitarman is Joe Smart's first solo album. After taking a hiatus from the music scene, Joe Smart has come back strong and with renewed energy. Mostly known for his fiddle playing in previous years, Joe began to pursue his first love and first instrument, the guitar. Influenced by all styles throughout the years, he has channeled those influences into his acoustic bluegrass, folk, and jazz styles. Since winning the National Flatpick Guitar Championship in Winfield, Kansas in 2005, he has taken on the music scene with vigor working with such artists as Tim May, Brad Davis, Mark O'Connor, Frank Vignola, and lately with fiddler and singer, Barbara Lamb.
The album is a collection of thoughts and ideas from over the past few years. Joe plays multiple instruments throughout the album and shows his ability to play each one well. It is a mixture of bluegrass, jazz, folk and country styles taking the listener on a musical journey one can only enjoy!

still recognize your style...but holy crap you've turned into a monster! I haven't played in 12 years and wish I hadn't quit. Just found out you won winfield and thought I'd buy a cd. I've heard 20 pickers's cds tonight and yours is definitely the best thing out since Markology.

Paul O'Donnell

enjoy the cd - talented guy.

I'm a wannabe bluegrass guitar player myself. My 'hero' is Doc Watson, so that should tell you what I like. I bought Joe's album after hearing the Alabama Jubilee cut and I think the whole CD is just great. Joe adds a lot more frills to the traditional songs like Beaumont Rag, but it's well worth a listen. He stays on the melody line a lot more than other guitarists who are trying to impress you with how many notes they can jam into a song. No one will surpass Doc, but Joe has recorded a fun CD. As a guitarist and a fan of this kind of music, you'll enjoy!
