Album Notes

Somebody’s Mother and the Acoustic Detour

Somebody’s Mother and the Acoustic Detour is an acoustic-based vocal harmony group playing a wide variety of well-known to more eclectic music, as well as more and more original songs. The group was originally formed by Camano Island, Washington residents Carla Helin and Cathy Tibert in 1993. In 2005, after singing together as a duo for many years, the two singers added Cathy’s husband Paul on bass, and fellow Camano Island resident Mike Hilley on Mandolin. In early 2006 Eric Wilmoth, a new resident to the island, joined the group lending lead guitar and vocal contributions.

2006 was a busy year for SMATAD and they enjoyed many fruitful gigs, finally entering Plum Tree Recording Studios (Stanwood, WA) for their debut CD in June. The result of that experience is Familiar Roads and New Horizons, A CD representing the band’s strongest material and also featuring original songs by Paul, Cathy, Carla and Eric. Released in October the CD has already received an enthusiastic response and has sold surprisingly well on the island.

Sit back, put your feet up and let Carla and Cathy and the rest of the band take you on an Acoustic Detour.

REVIEWS

Really liked the song selection and the original material.

Thoroughly enjoy this CD, both for the playing, singing, and song selection. This CD chooses some old(or not so old)tunes that bring back memories and original songs that fit in well, with a very gospel feel. Have the sense these are mature people that have lived a lot and come out on the other side happier and aware things always remain unknown. I think they do Lucinda Williams as good as lucinda just different.

Refreshing, energetic --puts you right in the middle of the music!
author: Lauren Wells
This debut CD from a talented bunch of Washington musicians is a refreshing and energetic approach to traditional, familiar songs peppered with well-done covers and infused with original songs, presenting the listener with a nice cross-section of acoustic rock, folk and locally flavored music. The original song GOES ON BY sums up the heart of the CD as you follow along with the band down familiar roads toward new horizons.
