Album Notes

The Album: Tryin’ To Hit A Lik, on SS Records

Tryin’ To Hit A Lik is an album that all types of people can enjoy: twenty one hot/bangin’ tracks, each one inspired by and envoking a different strain of southern hip hop. Smokey Smoke launches his powerful southern rap style on such memorable Smokey Smoke originals as “Game Iz So Crazy”, “Scoe Me A Meal Ticket”, “Go Legit” and “I Got What You Need”. The tracks are produced by a beat making genius Albert Redeaux(The Madd Creole). Tryin’ To Hit A Lik was recorded and mixed at the Cheddar Factory Studio in Austin, Texas.

Smokey Smoke began rapping at age 13, as a junior high student in Manor, Texas(lived in Austin) whose family always supported what he was doing (“Maybe that’s why I’m so dedicated to my music.”) In 1992 he formed a group with friends. They began recording demos and performing numerous shows though out Austin, slowly becoming well known local celebrities-all this before Smokey’s twenty first birthday.

Smokey had a fierce and energetic style of rapping and wrote much of the groups material, including their underground hit, “We Tha Shit”. At an age when most young men are admiring their rap idols, Smokey was one. When the group broke up in 1995, he remembers, “it was like my life was over. I had put so much of myself into the group, and suddenly I was all alone.”

In 1998 Smokey went solo, formed his independent record label SS Records and released his first solo album “Ridin’ & Chokin’”. It was an automatic underground success selling more than three thousand copies without a distribution deal. Smokey’s hard work and artistic integrity paid off in full, going on to sell more than five thousand copies. His 2000 release “Mr. I Be Smokin’ Green Sticky” sustained the hot streak with more than six thousand copies sold.

In 2002, Smokey formed his independent film company SS Films and began writing a film script for the soon to be released underground independent film “Makin’ Da Paper Stack”. Which he will be directing and starring in. It’s a film starring Smokey Smoke as the main character Deodre Hawkins aka D. D is an entrepreneur/gun dealer that is looking for a way to make some serious money. He ends up coming across some diamonds and makes a good amount of money through selling them to a very rich business owner.

After twelve years of music making, Smokey still believes strongly in Hip Hop and adheres to the ethics on which the music was built. Live performance remains Smokey’s first love. In 2000, a typical year, Smokey performed in over 50 shows/concerts including headlining performances in 10 shows/concerts.

I work hard every day “Tryin’ To Hit A Lik”, the new album by Smokey Smoke on SS Records.
