Album Notes

Seldom Heard Radio's three favorite indie releases of the month:

Periodically in this blog I will be mentioning noteworthy indie releases in all genres. I've enjoyed listening to Dan Smolla ever since discovering Swimming in Wind. His songwriting is unique, often blues-jazz-folk influenced with echoes of Van Morrison if you allow your mind to wander ... but only echoes, Dan Smolla's music is thoroughly original and thought provoking. Check out his new CD Sky of the Mind at www.dansmolla.com. All eleven tracks are outstanding.

Dan Smolla is a singer-songwriter living just outside Chicago, IL. His three self-released CD's have found considerable airplay on roots-oriented European radio stations and small, Independent stations in the U.S. The CD's have also received positive critical reviews (www.dansmolla.com). For extensive bio info, see Dan's interview with Real Roots Cafe on his website (www.dansmolla.com).

A brief sample of critical responses to previous CD's:

"A delicious blend of Tom Waits and Whiskeytown, the pauses holding you breathless."
**Maureen McCarthy DEAD FLOWERS

"So, its blues, its jazz, its good old rock 'n roll, its Van Morrison, its early Wilco, its Krautrock, its irritating and enthralling in equal parts depending on ones mood, its Jack Kerouac, its late night driving music but mostly its one mans tour-de-force."
**Tim Ford AMERICANA UK

"[H]is music is Kerouac soaked." **Editor REVIEWED4U
Dan has a powerful trump in his hands with his intelligent, existentialistic lyrics. There are little stories, like "Prison Letter", "Remember Me" and "The Drive", reminiscent of Earle and Springsteen...."
**Johanna J. Bodde REAL ROOTS CAFE

"Some of the most satisfying and genuine folk music you'll ever hear. Smolla has the ability to breath a separate soul into each and every track, while at the same time keeping his acoustic tour de force down to earth."
**Josh Kazman SPLEDIDZINE.COM

"Repeated listening is recommended, as tunes like "Lucky One" and "Heaven Through The Woods" really begin to impinge the more air you allow them. This reviewer also applauds the fact Dan's open-minded enough to mix back-porch acoustics with unusual textures."
**Tim Peacock WHISPERIN & HOLLERIN
