Album Notes

It's no surprise that The Snake Trio's home is the San Francisco Bay Area, home to a music scene that appreciates tradition while also reveling in experimentation. San Francisco music critic Chuy Varela describes The Snake Trio's music as "Latin Jazz with a cool Venezuelan twist". The title track on this, their second CD, "Light the Candle", is a percussive Afro-Venezuelan tune that shows off the rhythmic complexity and spiritual quality of Venezuelan music and also nicely supports improvisational explorations. This is not a Venezuelan jazz fusion sound, but more like a call and response between American jazz and traditional Venezuelan music. Other songs weave the traditions into a single thread with the cuatro, bass and flute winding deep inside a gorgeous Snake Trio groove.

The percussion is subtle, yet powerful, and gives plenty of energy to the amazing melodies. There's much more flute and less saxophone than their first album, which I think is a wonderful new direction for the group.

I love this CD. The music is so unique, soothing and beautiful. The different string instruments add an intriguing difference to the music. The variety and intensity of the percussion is fabulous. Even my 11 year old daughter loves to listen to the CD.
