notes
The Late Show is a duo CD featuring original compositions as well as several standards. Recorded at Houston's Double Image Studios in October, 2003, the CD melds the lyricism of Texas tenor Warren Sneed with the opulent voicings of New York-born pianist Joe LoCascio. After having worked together in a variety of musical situations over the years, it seemed only natural that these two artists should record as a duo.
Trumpet great Marvin Stamm has this to say about the collaboration:
"The Late Show, a duo project by pianist Joe LoCascio and saxophonist Warren Sneed, is a lovely and interesting work. The originals are fresh, and the standards are re-worked beautifully. The playing is extremely interesting, and, to my ears, Joe and Warren are so attuned to each other as to have a bit of telepathy going on between them. This is an excellent CD that any serious music listener will enjoy."
Joe LoCascio has resided in Houston since 1977. A prolific performer/composer, he has twelve recordings to his credit, many of them having attained prominent radio airplay nationally and abroad. He has performed and/or recorded with jazz luminaries such as Chet Baker, Freddie Hubbard, Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, Ernie Watts, Marvin Stamm, George Coleman, and George Mraz among others. Jazz critics nationwide have acclaimed him as one of the finest artists on the contemporary scene. He is currently Assistant Chairman of Jazz Studies at Houston Community College. A unique and remarkable recording
author: Jim SpackmanThis is a really remarkable recording. With the rare lineup of only piano and sax, the music is unique both harmonically and rythmically. In both aspects, the result is something very fluid. Joe and Warren at times seem to be playing with one mind, and even when what each is playing seems to diverge from the other it is only for the purpose of flowing back together again. I am particularly enamored of "Cindy," one of Warren's compositions, beautiful melody that is remeniscent of something I've heard before but can't quite place (I mean that in a GOOD way). "Sonia Braga" is another highlight, but it would be misleading to single out particular songs too much, as the entire CD is just a joy to hear. The standards are well chosen, and the Lerner/Loewe song "Wouldn't it be Loverly" (from MY FAIR LADY) is a great way to end this CD (since it does have to end). Thanks to Joe and Warren for this outstanding recording. Everyone else who doesn't have it, go get it. Soon.
Great Stuff
