"Devils Are Dreaming", a no-budget feature film from Plug Ugly Films and Director Michael Sladek, premiered at the 2004 Newport Beach Film Festival and won a Best Feature Award at 2004 Dances With Films festival. The movie is a black comedy about high art, pornography, and a thirty-year-old loser caught in between. It has been described by Kurt Loder of MTV/Rolling Stone as "...filled with real feeling...", by writer Jamaica Kincaid as "...vibrant and touching..." by the OC Weekly as "...(a) potent debut picture..." and by John Norris of MTV News as "Original, clever, funny and disturbing". FilmThreat.com said "...Stephen Donovan gives a great performance..." and that "...Sladek is an interesting new voice in the cinema world..."
The Soundtrack for "Devils Are Dreaming" was a huge hit with audiences at festivals and at other screenings. Film Threat called it a "...highly inspired 'punk score'..." while the OC Weekly dubbed it "...affecting mope-rock...".
The Sobs, who scored the film, are the side project of Brooklyn punk band Stupid members Dana Ehrlich and Matthew Bixby. The two musicians saw an early edit of the movie and had creative meetings with the director where they were asked to treat the score as its own character in the film. They then went off for a single night of lo-fi, stream-of-consciousness composing, recording and mixing straight to a four-track. Dana and Matt played guitar, accordion and a handful of toys.
Most of the fist takes from this initial, inspired, night of creative flow were used in the film. A few of the songs were added to or slightly tweaked (ie adding a baseline) but almost every song in the Soundtrack is a direct result of this first session.
Stupid, who contributed a couple tracks, are a staple of the current post-punk renaissance based mainly in New York City. The Village Voice says they're "...reminiscent of the Pixies...", while Time Out NY says they're "...like X with a better ear...", and Punk Planet calls them "...dirty NYC rock...".
"Devils Are Dreaming", as of Fall 2004, is still on the film festival circuit. Check www.pluguglyfilms.com for updates regarding screenings and a release date and check www.stupidband.com for more about Stupid and The Sobs.
