On many Internet forums, certain people have a tendency to create multiple identities to try to appear to be several different people. They do this for many different reasons, but in general, the alternate identities are called "sockpuppets." Along those lines, Sockpuppet is a musical experiment, born out of the Song Fight! community (songfight.org) - an attempt at sounding like multiple different people in multiple different bands. Sockpuppet attempts to produce songs in many different genres, genders, voices, and origins, while still maintaining a unified whole. There is as much different between songs as there is the same, and that in and of itself is perhaps the strongest unifying factor.

At its core, the only truth of Sockpuppet is that it is the work of a single person in San Francisco, making friends out of disused scraps.
