No Shame

by Sofia (Po' Girl)

Genuine gypsies, they wander and play. Always restless, more often than not bone-tired, they write their flashes of sadness, their loss, their good love, their faint dreams of home into songs that matter deeply to them.

ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
No Shame is a special edition album released under the name of “Sofia”. Don’t fear, this is still Po’ Girl at their best, just an under-the-radar side project to provide fans with a little something extra.

The beauty and mystery of Po Girl's music – a sound that has beguiled fans the world over - springs from the dynamic, improbable, mesmerizing bond shared by its two principal singers and writers – Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira. Hailing from Montreal and Toronto respectively, both women left untenable home situations at fourteen, found music instead of bad ends, and lived to sing the tales. The interplay between these two stunning performers is truly something to behold.

After adding the impossibly talented tickler/maker of all stringed things - Benny Sidelinger - to their number last year, Po' Girl has been touring relentlessly over North America, Europe, and beyond. Many of the trappings of the trademark Po' Girl sound are still there – the echoes of speakeasy jazz, the western lament, the accordion-strapped ghosts of European folk --- but it's all delivered with a soulful clarity and depth only hinted at on previous records.

It seems almost silly – and not very interesting – to trot out a long, endlessly hyphenated list of the many influences coursing through Po Girl's music. Suffice to say it's 21st Century roots music, urban roots – never derivative, not faithfully aping a beloved tradition. Teixeira and Russell don't re-hash the old forms, they reshape and reinvigorate them for new ears.

Sofia Po'Girl
Po'Girl has been one of my faves since first I heard them. Another stellar outing! My only regret is that I missed their Salt Lake City show recently. Please!! Please come back!!

Every now and then
Fortunately, at last, this album becomes available. A friend bought a copy at a show and played it for me. I recognized Allison's voice instantly, and wondered why I never came across it since I'd followed Po Girl from the start. Every now and then this kind of magic happens with music, and you stumble on songs like ¨She Slips Through¨. No bells and whistles, no overworked arrangements, just sheer power and emotion in the trembling of the voice and the chords of a guitar. The entire album has a natural, healthy ear-delighting sound that makes you sigh with relief knowing that there are still true musicians out there. Way to go Sofia, Salt, and Po' Girl - you bring harmony to the world.

HARDLY "a little something extra"!
Absolutely beautiful album! Much more intimate feeling than "Deer in the Night". Fabulous sound engineering! The harmonies are indescribably lovely. "Sweet" falls short. The chemistry generated by these 2 singers is irresistible. Tracks I now can't live without ... 1,2,3,6,12 and all 4 songs shared with "Deer in the Night" which are given a more delicate and emotive treatment here. Almost as if I hadn't really heard them before. If you are a fan you have to have this. (Side note: Ben Sidelinger isn't in the credits on this album - maybe he is playing in the unlisted bonus track at the end)?
