A rock-electronic-dub-blues, extravaganza, the newest release from Sounds of Influence represents a huge inspiration for aspiring musicians. Jonathan Wright is the sole member of SOI. Songwriter, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer, he has created a slick, mature and well-rounded album. Listeners may be surprised to hear he created it by himself, all from home. “Well, with help from my friends” clarifies Jonny. This album features the work of several guest musicians including the bluesy and beautiful guitar work of Shawn Cupolo of Hotfoot, vocal stylings of locally known Brandon Weaver of Seven-Eight, as well as a couple of debut musicians including Erin Wright and Michael Brannon. Unlike many other forms of art, the music business seems increasingly corporate and inaccessible to most musicians. Jonny aims to take the power back, allowing his art form to come to fruition without becoming mired in the politics of image, rock-stardom, record deals etc. “I want the music to speak for itself.” states Jonny, “too many musicians are in it for the image.” Not that a little fame and fortune would hurt, but that isn’t Jonny’s starting motivation. “I’m doing it for love of music, I will always be making music.” Truly living up to the name Sounds of Influence, this album pays tribute to many influences of the past and present. “It is my belief that musicians recreate the songs they know and love in fresh and unique ways. So, the bands that influence musicians are of utmost importance. If you take away my influences, I don't know what would be left. As the phrase goes* "It's all been done before." I do believe that artists can produce something fresh and new but it is inevitably rooted and inspired by their own musical influences.” An eclectic post-rock collage, this album takes you on a journey though genres whilst maintaining its originality and focus. The sounds and songwriting are mature, it is recorded and produced with great finesse, and the subject matter ranges from serious to humorous The joy of music is evident in this album. There is a levity and positivity that is new for SOI. Jonny seems to be achieving a new level of expression as an artist and it shines through! Give ‘ 9’ a listen.
