Album Notes

Chicago jazz vocalist Solitaire Miles captivates the seasoned jazz veteran with mesmeric tone, conversational phrasing, and a sinuous sense of swing. Her unaffected delivery never draws attention to itself, allowing the lyrics to shine through. She presents each song in a sincere manner, intimating a supple delivery so the patois of each arrangement has a lasting effect on the listener. Her timing and style impressed Chautauqua Symphony Bassist Harry Jacobson enough to label her as "Billie Holiday with sunshine and air".

Her debut album includes some of Chicago's best performers, arranged by the great jazz violinst Johnny Frigo and incomparable pianist Willie Pickens, the recording reflects the laid back, forthright swing that is signature of the Chicago sound. Also featured is Chicago Sax Maestro Von Freeman, who keeps the music genuine and sassy. There is also a cameo from trumpeter Brad Goode and three live tracks recorded in New York with pianist Don Rebic.

Solitaire Miles is a must for all jazz fans. This is a nice mix of songs all expertly rendered with accompaniments and some great violin by Johnny Frigo. The Feast of Fools podcast (show #699) takes all the credit for introducing me to this album. BUY IT, lie back and prepare to be transported away on a cloud!

I'm from Chicago, and it seems that Miss Miles has collected all of the greatest talent from our city for this beautiful recording. Of course the best thing about the recording is that it was arranged by the late, great jazz violinist Johnny Frigo. I found this album a few days ago listed on Johnny's Wikipedia site, and it's on my wishlist now! Miles and Frigo compliment each other like chocolate and truffles; His masterful arranging and playing compliment her smooth, warm vocals like nothing I've ever heard! Willie Pickens, the King of Chicago Jazz, is also a masterful jazz pianist, and Von Freeman adds a bit of sass to the whole, beautiful thing. Bravo Solitaire!
