Somtow Sucharitkul's opera MADANA (2001) was the first full-length grand opera by a Thai composer to be produced. This CD features live excerpts from the premiere production, starring a young and very virtuoso coloratura soprano, Stacey Tappan (now with the Chicago Lyric Opera) as a rose magically transformed into a beautiful woman, who wins the love of a king and the undying enmity of his jealous wife.
The production comes from the Bangkok Opera. The large cast is backed by the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra under the direction of the composer.
