Album Notes

Niño Torrente and Son de Hoy is a New York City band led by Cuban-born bassist, singer, and composer, Niño Torrente. Its repertorie ranges from traditional Cuban songs to original compositions. The band's tight sound draws from old rhythms filtered through the multicultural energy of New York City.

The music is a mixture of rhythmic overtones with warm harmonies, romantic lyrics, and an urban feel that makes you tap your feet and sway to the rich sounds. Memorable hooks stay with you long after you're done listening. The compositions move both body and spirit.

This is a  summary of the Press Release from MRG.(Music Resource Group)

Once again, we're delighted to share with the world incredible, independent talent. We've expanded this 5th Independent Music Awards (IMAs) program to honor 35 music category winners (17 genre-based Album of the Year & 18 genre- based Song of the Year) and four design category winners including Album Packaging, Album Photography, Poster Art and Band Website.

Ranging from artists with long standing recording credits to emerging talent with growing national fan bases; to developing acts with a draw in their native markets; and hailing from the USA, Canada, Cuba, Armenia, Virgin Islands, Australia and Mali, IMA winners prove once again, that indie talent knows no boundaries.

Says IMA Program Director, Martin Folkman "The only thing that separates these fine artists and their music from multi-platinum success is access to major market promotion outlets and a broader definition of what is commercial. Since it's inception the IMAs focus has been to create wider recognition for artists from both industry and music fans."

IMA Winners Promoted To More Than 8 Million
Key to the success of the IMA program is the strategic partnerships, distribution alliances and yearlong marketing initiatives MRG has established.

As in the past, Borders Books & Music will promote the winners of this year’s program to more than 7 million of their customers via links to the IMA Jukebox. The winners’ own releases will also be available for sale on the BordersStores.com retail site.

In addition to posting music for all the winners on an Independent Music Awards Jukebox, MRG will press 10,000 copies of the "IMA Winners 2006" CD. The compilation will be distributed to music journalists, commercial, public & college radio stations, industry movers & shakers, and music fans.

Additionally, Boston-based radio promotion company, The Planetary Group, will service the IMA Winners CD to college stations throughout USA & Canada; and Mediaguide, a Berwyn, PA-based radio airplay tracking company, will provide a year of radio airplay results for all tracks included on every IMA winning artist’s full-length CD. Mediaguide currently monitors more than 2,500 stations.

The winners of this year’s program were selected by a celebrity panel of judges that included: Norah Jones; Melissa Etheridge; Joe Perry; Bill Wyman; George Clinton; Jonatha Brooke; Chris Thile; Paquito D’Rivera; Sara Lee; Hubert Sumlin; Abby White, music editor of Performing Songwriter; Melinda Newman, music editor of Billboard; Dan Storper, president of Putumayo World Music; Alexandra Patsavas, music supervisor & founder of The Chop Shop; and Robert Goodale, co-founder of UltraStar Entertainment.

Now meet and hear the winners of the 5th Independent Music Awards

Niño Torrente is on fire!
author: HombreLeon
This is one of the first CDs that I fell in love with the minute I heard it. Not only is it nice to listen to in your car, the music is excellent for dancing. I DJ regularly at salsa venues in the Phoenix area, and I make sure to put tracks from this CD on every time I play. This is definitely a must have CD.

Refreshing

This entire CD is wonderful. The salsa music here has a very authentic and sincere Cuban sound. Nino Torrente is the author of most of the tracks. I personally was interested in "Como Fue" a slow romantic tune originally made popular by the great Beny More, Torrente's rendition is fresh, with added backup vocals which give the song a newer feel. There are two slow romantic tracks. The music here is very danceable and it has the feel of being in a small Havana club with someone special. I highly recommend this CD, a very good buy.

Cuba lives by way of New York City salsa/son.

This CD brought me back to growing up in NYC and listening to the Cuban Masters. It is non-stop dancing, excellently recorded and executed and ____ infectious! I bought several for family members after I stumbled on it while poking around the CDBaby site (which is full of treasures!)
