The Sonics re-united in 2007 for one gig, answering any questions that
fans, bands and journalists have wondered for years. Who were these
psycho demons of sound who created blood curdling songs about witches,
drinking strychnine, the devil waiting, and psycho dramas? Screams that
made the skin crawl and hearts stop, and ripping guitar sounds that fried
brains and shredded ears. They were five young musicians from Tacoma
Washington, USA, who played loud, and then louder rock 'n' roll cover songs,
thinking this would mask any mistakes they might make. What they didn't
realize at the time was they were also developing the future sounds and
energy of rock. It was transformed into the Sonics earth shaking first single
"The Witch" in 1964. The Sonics debut album "Here Are The Sonics" in 1965
nailed their unique sound, and later their second album "Sonics Boom"
in 1966.
Moved and exhilarated by the reception they received at two sold-out shows
in New York in 2007, they were invited to perform in cities across Europe,
the US, Canada in '08, '09 and '10, receiving rave reviews. The Sonics
were back - powerful, wild, unrelenting, touring and meeting long term fans
and leaving a trail of international audiences with unforgettable experiences.
Introducing the Sonics new EP titled 8. Produced by Sonic Larry Parypa
with famed engineer Jack Endino at the controls at Sound House studio in
Seattle, the Sonics are back at it. The band's first studio recordings since
the '60's, featuring four new originals plus four live performances captured at
various venues while touring in Europe. It's also an opportunity to introduce
new member, bassist/singer Freddie Dennis. Freddie has been touring with
the group since '09 and is also a co-writer with Sonics guitar player Larry
Parypa, adding his gutsy voice on "Bad Attitude" & "Vampire Kiss," plus
alternates vocal chores on the EP's live tracks with Jerry Roslie, who sings
"Cheap Shades" and "Don't Back Down," co-written by Sonics sax man
Rob Lind and Parypa. Drummer Ricky Lynn Johnson lays down the beat on
all tours, in the studio, and live tracks on the EP. Sonics original bass player
Andy Parypa played on the four studio tracks, and Freddie plays bass on the
live tracks: “Cinderella”, “Strychnine”, “Don’t Be Afraid Of The Dark”, “Psycho”.
