Sonny Rhodes is a true Texas Blues legend. He is a triple threat playing guitar, lap steel guitar, and singing the blues the way they are supposed to be sung. If that is not enough for you -- Sonny Rhodes writes some of the most intelligent, insightful, and humorous lyrics you will ever hear.
Lap steel enthusiasts deem Sonny Rhodes a Master of the lap steel guitar and his sound as the ultimate. There may be faster or flashier players of this instrument but no one has ever achieved the broad rich stinging tones of Sonny Rhodes.
Sonny’s voice is deep, round, and vibrant. His songs are personal and poignant. Sonny, with his friends and contemporaries Albert Collins, Johnny Clyde Copeland, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Joe Hughes, defined Texas Blues. He is best known for having penned the theme to the Fox TV series, Firefly. The United States Congress honored Sonny Rhodes aptly referring to him one of America’s treasures.
Sonny Rhodes “LIVE” is a recently recorded live performance from the famed Warmdaddy’s in Philadelphia. It features the East Coast unit of the Sonny Rhodes Band. Harmonica player and bandleader, Big Nancy is a Sonny Rhodes prodigy as she toured with Sonny in the late eighties. Former Albert Collins guitarist, Debbie Davies writes, "(Nancy is) one of the rare breed of really good female harp players. There's no fluff; this is a real deep blues harp player." Appearing with Nancy are Mike Flynn on guitar, Ken Sorrell on Bass, and Jake Jor-el on drums.
This CD, like everything at the hip East Coast nightclub Warmdaddy’s, is homemade - served with grit, love, and a lot of soul! Remember it is recorded live and it is hard to get a feel for the music in 30 seconds... but try it -- you'll like it!
