Album Notes

The Sonship music ministry was started in 1995 with Gospel R & B roots and has since expanded its scope to include Latin Jazz, Brazilian music and elements of Funk. The band features Tim Reyes on guitar, Mark Leontovich on keyboards, Manny Lanzot on bass, Daniel Gonzalez on drums and Wilfredo Velez on alto saxophone. Sonship's purpose is "to express God's love through contemporary sounds."

Behold the Lamb of God mixes popular Gospel standards with original pieces written by Mark Leontovich. The Caribbean flavored "Rejoicing" starts off the CD on an uplifting groove, followed by fresh arrangements of "I Love You Lord" and "Great Is Thy Faithfulness." "Faith (Like a Child)" is a brief interlude that is reminiscent of pianist/composer Chick Correa's 1991 release entitled "Friends"-a reference for the true jazz lovers! Sonship maintained the meditative mood of "Holy, Holy, Holy" while sneaking in a backbeat; The title track "Behold the Lamb" is set in a Jazz standard style; "Glory to His Name" is a funky treatment to an old favorite; "The Road Home" is a beautiful original ballad, while "What a Friend We Have In Jesus" is arranged in an old church vein.

Sonship has been featured on www.GospelFlava.com and cuts from the CD can be heard on Tony Smith's "Gospel Jazzations" program on 89.1 WFDU. Recently, the band performed at New Mercies Café, Sunday Night Live at Justin's Restaurant and at Koinonia Restaurant at the Christian Cultural Center. Rejoicing is the album's opener. Manny Lanzot's pulsing bass line is joined by drummer Daniel Gonzalez's polyrhythms and Mark Leon's lush keyboards to create a rhythmic tour de force for Wilfredo Velez's soaring saxophone. After the melody is stated, the rhythm section surges into overdrive for a burning sax solo. Rejoicing indeed! The tune is a powerful combination of Latin rhythms mixed with complex harmonic variations and gets the album off to a rousing start. I wish this Gospel Jazz group the Very Best.

Truly an anointed project. Wilfredo Velez has gone from playing with some heavy hitters in the secular world (ray Baretto, Mongo Santamaria, etc) to playing for the heaviest of them all, Jesus Christ! Mark,Manny and Danny play together in the complete sense of the word. Get this cd and stay tuned for theier next one!
