Album Notes

Son Of The Velvet Rat is the solo project of European singer/songwriter Georg Altziebler - an omnibus designation for the artist’s solo work (vocals and guitars) and performances with rotating supporting musicians.

Formed in 2000 together with Robert Kres on violin and harmonium as an experimental reaction to the predominance of angst-ridden testoserone rock, Son Of The Velvet Rat essentially filters the dark romanticism of Leonard Cohen and Nick Drake through the pop songcraft and the aesthetics of 60-bpm lo-fi rock.

“Playground” features minimalistic songs layered with brooding vocals, sparse orchestrations and poetic lyrics that are laced with recurring themes of alienation and loneliness. The album’s 14 titles do not offer an audio facade polished to a high sheen but rather an intimate situation report.

Great Album
author: Richard McGraw
I rode the train from Beacon to Manhattan this morning. I couldn't write, pray, think or focus on that old Hudson River. I kept playing track 14 on playground (when she walks in the room) over and over again. I couldn't get over it, I couldn't move on. I still cant. This is one of my favorite bands and this is a great collection of songs. That is what the modern artist seems to forget, that a great album means great songs. SVR must understands this truth. They are continuing the tradition of the well crafted heart song, right behind or in front of those men like L. Cohen, T. Waits, B. Dylan and the late great Townes Van Zandt.
