A San Francisco singer with a loyal following and a lot of buzz. "A decidedly modern jazz diva." SF CHRONICLE "She's going to be a smash. Great voice, great style, great songs." D. Bowen, KRML Radio

notes

OUT OF THIS WORLD is the wonderful CD of jazz/pop standards that Sony Holland fans have been waiting for. With effortless swing and perfect pitch she jazzes up a phrase by sliding gracefully into silky high-notes and soothing lows. The SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE says, “Her voice combines the pop styling of Nancy Wilson and the open-throated bell tones of Streisand.”

Sony has built an ardent following initially attracted by her CD of original material titled ON A SAN FRANCISCO HIGH released in 2004. She has played to packed houses at all of the top Bay Area jazz venues including Yoshi’s, Pearl’s, The Empire Plush Room, The Carmel Jazz & Blues Company, 142 Throckmorton Theatre, the Lesher Center, the San Francisco Jazz Summerfest, the Fillmore Jazz Festival, the Sausalito Arts Festival, etc, etc… Among her career highlights she lists performing for Royal Princess Masako of Japan and singing our National Anthem for the baseball Giants.

She was born in the icy north of Minnesota where Dad was a Minister and Mom directed the choir. She studied music mostly by emulating favorite jazz performers and has honed her craft during long performance runs in Asia. At home in San Francisco she keeps sharp by gigging in every possible setting including nightclubs, parties, galas, cafés, weddings, festivals and concert halls. In the process she has developed into a world-class entertainer with a style uniquely her own.

OUT OF THIS WORLD establishes Sony Holland as a marvelous interpreter of the Great American Songbook with a voice that will charm sophisticated listeners everywhere.

L.A. Jazz Scene CD REVIEWS FEBRUARY 2007
By Jim Santella

Based in San Francisco, jazz singer Sony Holland delivers a program of thirteen welcome selections, including standards and several originals. Following the mainstream and swinging casually with a hip demeanor, she interprets with a genuine ambience. Working with small, acoustic ensembles, she follows tradition, interpreting each song from the heart.

“Out Of This World” features an exotic interpretation with plenty of built-in excitement, while “At Last” finds the singer pouring emotionally with a laid-back blues texture. The chills can go right through you. Holland’s interpretation of “Skylark” appears in its timeless caricature, while “The Thrill Is Gone” changes pace with a hot guitar/organ combo. It’s on these heated numbers that the singer shows the best aspects of her art: forceful emotion from deep within, along with immaculate musical precision.

Sony Holland treats straight-ahead jazz standards with the care of a traditionalist while bringing a fresh, emotional spark to the forum. Among those providing stellar accompaniment and musical partnership for her recommended album are pianists Art Khu and John R. Burr, guitarist Jim Nichols, tenor saxophonist Charles McNeal, bassist John Shifflett, and drummer David Rokeach.

I loved every song on this CD. Sony's voice is absolutely beautiful and the musicians are very hip!

  • The best voice, and best story teller, I've heard in years

This is simply a beautiful CD. At any tempo, and whether playful or heart-rending, Sony lets us feel every song. I rarely find new renditions of standards that I really like, but Sony's interpretations of "In a Sentimental Mood," "The Nearness of You," and "Skylark" have taken over as my favorite renditions among the several of each in my collection. I love "I'll Lead the Way," And anyone who hasn't heard Jerry Holland's compositions should give a listen to"It's an Understatement" and "By the Sea."

  • Beautiful Album

My friend Joanne gave me this album as a gift and I love it. The songs which I remember in my younger years are just so beautifully sung by this singer. Her voice is like satin. I also really enjoyed I'll Lead The Way which I've never heard before but it is one of my favorites on this album.

  • WOW!

Loved Sony's interpretation of the standards. Enjoyed the new songs, especially 'It's an understatement'- clever lyrics. The musicians are first rate and I can't stop playing it!

Saw Sony on Fisherman's Wharf in Spring 2006 and have been a fan ever since. This is a good set in the "standards" vein and a nice follow-up to On A SF High. Sony's voice is really great on this one. The original compositions by J Holland are authentic to the style and just as enjoyable as the previous release. Nice to hear the rest of the band stretch a little bit as well. Nice guitar solos. Keep them coming!

  • This is an excellent interpretation of jazz favorites.

The quality of Out of This World truly lives up to its title. Sony Holland brings a sparkling upbeat mood to this compilation CD that isn't as apparent on her last CD. Holland's warm, expressive vocals wonderfully complement the rich instrumentals performed by top-notch Bay Area jazz musicians. The album itself is a perfectly balanced arrangement of standards and new music by accomplished composer Jerry Holland.

This CD is one of Sony's best yet. Her renditions of Old Devil Moon, At Last, I've Got You Under My Skin etc... will leave you spellbound. The sensual latin rhythms of It's An Understatment written by Jerry Holland along with the Carmel tribute song, By The Sea, are simply fantastic in their atisticly penned lyrics and blend in a subtle yet romantic mix of creative genius. This CD is a must for any music lover.
