Album Notes

Debra Lyn is originally from upstate New York. Her musical interest was sparked and nurtured by her grandmother, Betsy Lewis, who was also a performer during the World War II era. Betsy gave Debra her first guitar when she was twelve years old and encouraged her to learn to play and sing. Before too long Debra was playing music around the campfire, entering talent contests and performing with local country music bands.

Along with her band Cimmeron, Debra won the Northeast Country Music Association’s “Sunrise Award” for best new country act. Cimmeron released the Indie single “My Heart’s True to You,” written by Debra and Ed Legenbauer, which received airplay on country radio stations from New York to California.

In 2002, Debra and her band, Soulgrass, completed their self titled CD. The cd showcases strong original material from a woman's perspective and several unique R&B covers in a bluegrass vein. It also features the tasteful playing of Curtis Burch, a founding member of New Grass Revival. Curtis played on the Grammy award winning "Great Dobro Sessions" and the "Oh Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. Two singles, including “You Didn’t Come Home,” an original written by Debra, and "Gimme Some Lovin," were released nationally on the “Prime Cuts of Bluegrass” compilation CD. Nearly 400 stations reported airplay for these singles. The Soulgrass version of “Love Please Come Home” was also added to the playlist for cable television’s “Music Choice.” Soulgrass performed at numerous venues throughout the southeastern U.S., such as Nashville, Tennessee’s famous Station Inn. Debra and Soulgrass were also featured performers on many live radio and television programs in Kentucky, Indiana, North Carolina and Tennessee.

Recently, Debra decided to get back to her “country” roots and teamed up with Jeff Silverman, of Palette Productions in Nashville, TN. Jeff is a veteran producer, songwriter, accomplished musician and singer. Together Debra and Jeff have written and produced 10 songs for her “I Can’t Remember To Forget You” CD. The title track was also chosen to be the flagship music video project for Sowelu Entertainment, with Shari Belafonte and Sam Behrens and can be seen on Debra’s official website.

"I Can't Remember To Forget You" was originally released as a 7-song EP and introduced Debra Lyn to the world. One of the most popular songs on iTunes has been "I'll Always Miss The Love I Left Behind." A unique remake of Harry & Sandy Chapins' classic song "Cats in the Cradle" was released as a single last summer and has also received quite of bit of attention and is running high on the popularity graphs in the United States and many other countries.

REVIEWS

Contemporary bluegrass with a lot of feeling
author: Joe Ross (for Nwbluegrass)

Soulgrass, a band formed in the spring of 2001 which calls south central Kentucky home, has taken an approach to their contemporary bluegrass that combines elements of soul, R&B, rock, country, and folk. The core group is Debbie Heavers (bass, guitar, vocals), David Foster (guitar, bass, vocals), and Curtis Burch (dobro, bass). Occasionally, sidemen Joe Larson (banjo, harmonica, vocals) and Joel Whittinghill (fiddle, mandolin) also play with the band. Bill Verheide plays the spoons on "Gimme Some Lovin'." The covers on this album range from Leon Jackson's "Love Please Come Home" to "Downtown" (remember the song that won Petula Clark a Grammy in 1964) to a Jackson 5 tune (I Want You Back), some Beatles (Help), and one originally recorded by the Spencer Davis Group (Gimme Some Lovin'). The seven original numbers written by Debbie Heavers that fill out Soulgrass' debut album clearly show that Heavers is a prolific singer-songwriter. Her songs about relationships have a strong country feel, and "Stay With Me" rocks. It was nice to see the written lyrics included in the CD's jacket. Soulgrass succeeds by presenting their brand of bluegrass with strong feeling, emotion and expression. (JR)
