notes
SparkleJet started life---as a roots-rock recording project---in the winter of 1996. In the summer of 1997, we offered the world our first self-released album. Simply entitled, "SOAP", the CD was received well by critics and was compared to artists like; Tom Petty, Paul Westerberg and the Replacements. Then, a great thing happened: SparkleJet grew-up and got its act together. We wrote some songs, played a lot of shows, re-wrote some songs and went into the studio. What came outta that was 1998's "This Years Model"; a 13-song offering that garnered rave reviews from publications like; The Fresno Bee, San Francisco Guardian, BAM, Sacramento's Alive & Kickin', Yeah Yeah Yeah, and various on-line Web site reviews. We got on some compilations, including "Man You Gotta Move", released on Heyday Records. We did a couple of Northwest tours, drank a lot of beer and even sold some CDs in the process. "This Years Model" got us featured in Billboard Magazine under, "Artist Spotlight: Best New Artist". The songs, "Move On", "Take Me Home", and "Keep 'Em Guessin'", were featured during segments in 2000's ESPN Extreme Games.
So now, we come to the album featured here at CDBaby, "Bar Guest". Released in November 2001, it was recently mentioned in NEUMU.net, under one of it's writer's best of 2001 list. The songs on this album range from: the muscular, pounding groove of "Slip On This"; the unrelenting drive, kinetic beat and dissonance of "Dog Riot"; the unabashedly and uncompromising hooks of "We Get In A Hurry"; to the angular, abstractionism of "Silence of the Day". Probably SparkleJet's most challenging and adventurous work to date.

When Do These Guys Tour?
author: Melissa-AtlantaI stumbled on this band by accident by a random search in Google. The Google entry was a portion of an article between this writer and his friend discussing a band that they thought sounded a bit like The Pixies, so I clicked on the link being a huge Pixies fan and skeptically pressed on. The article was amusing enough for me to go to the band’s site and judge for myself. When I listened to the first MP3 available, I just loved this band. I can understand The Pixies influence, but it’s not blatant……it’s just an influence that’s present in the approach to some of the songs. These guys have much more depth then that and explore more avenues later in the cd. Being a bass payer myself, I just love the production on this album, chalked full of distorted low end it doesn’t get much better then that. In this day and age, old schoolers like myself (closer to 40 then 20) have a bad habit of dismissing bands that remotely sound like something they already have listened to, my suggestion to all is don’t do the same towards this band. This is a really good band that made some really great music that one should explore. Listen to the tracks on Barguest you won’t be disappointed.
Rawks my Ass!
author: Theresa MaeThis CD is hard rockin from start to finish. Right off the block it delivers 3 driving songs - a little punkish, and totally unapologetic. Then Emilio is where they start to show their flirtatious diversity. Influences can be heard throughout: the Pixies, the Kinks, a little Beckish at times and a good measure of San Joaquin Valley roots rock. The songs are fresh, well crafted and delivered with raw energy. These guys need to be huge!
