Album Notes

Spencer Bates always loved to sing. As a film student at Northwestern University, he had never played an instrument, but Spencer's underlying passion for performing inspired him to teach himself to play the piano, chord by chord, day by day, and to begin writing his own music. His first self-produced demo, "Everybody has a Song," received modest exposure and was favorably reviewed on a number of websites, ultimately attracting the attention of mixer/producer Chris Trevett. Together, they produced the "Back to School EP Demo," an early preview of Spencer's approach to his first fully-realized album, "Goodnight Rosebud", released in early 2006. Although he has a style all his own, Spencer has already been compared to Elton John and Billy Joel. As male singer/songwriters come back into style, Spencer, armed with his piano, instead of a guitar, fills an obvious void in the mainstream. The depth, wit, and insight of Spencer's constantly evolving songwriting allow him to stand out as a voice from his generation with still much to say. Today, the Chevy Chase, Maryland native is playing at East coast colleges, in addition to the regular shows he has in piano bars across the Baltimore/Washington metro area.

- "the passion in artists like Spencer Bates is what gives music its edge..." - The Georgetown Independent

- "his vocals are quite cool" - The Dartmouth

- "proves himself to be an artist of substance" - The Georgetown Voice

- this demo received over 45,000 downloads from Mp3.com between 2002 and 2003, at one time charting two recordings simultaneously in the international Top 10 Pop Charts

Soulful and heartfelt!

This CD showcases the talent of one of the most incredible up and coming young artists I've heard. Spencer's voice is full of power and passion. His songs echo the emotions we've all felt but somehow couldn't find the words to express. Some upbeat, some sad, but all pure...the songs on this album compliment almost every emotion and provide great music for just about any situation.

Spencer's song writing has an emotional maturity far beyound his years.

This collection has many many well written songs. Twenty-one, and Subway both have lyrics with an emotional maturity unexpected from such a young artist. The extensive piano solo initiating Just for You and Me is a treat. I purchased both of Spencer's CDs and haven't been able to listen to The Back to School EP because I keep playing Everyone has a Song over and over again. Great stuff!!!
