Spencer Bates always loved to sing. As a film student at Northwestern University, he had never played an instrument, but Spencer's underlying passion for performing inspired him to teach himself to play the piano, chord by chord, day by day, and to begin writing his own music. His first self-produced demo, "Everybody has a Song," received modest exposure and was favorably reviewed on a number of websites, ultimately attracting the attention of mixer/producer Chris Trevett. Together, they produced the "Back to School EP Demo," an early preview of Spencer's approach to his first fully-realized album, "Goodnight Rosebud", released in early 2006. Although he has a style all his own, Spencer has already been compared to Elton John and Billy Joel. As male singer/songwriters come back into style, Spencer, armed with his piano, instead of a guitar, fills an obvious void in the mainstream. The depth, wit, and insight of Spencer's constantly evolving songwriting allow him to stand out as a voice from his generation with still much to say. Today, the Chevy Chase, Maryland native is playing at East coast colleges, in addition to the regular shows he has in piano bars across the Baltimore/Washington metro area.
- This demo's recording of Spencer's song "Let It Slide" was chosen a Washingtonpost.com "Editor's Pick" in the pop genre in 2003.

You can tell he's hot from his voice

This CD is everything that I wanted to hear. His first album, Everybody has a Song, was great. The simple, meaningful love songs fill a distinct void in popular music today. However, this new album demonstrates depth and maturity that are unmatched by any song off of the first album. Not only are these songs recorded more interestingly, but they demonstrate a self-deprecating wit and youthful earnestness that is matched by no other artist today. Spencer Bates is growing as an artist, and I'm just glad that I could be around to witness it.

I couldn't stop listening to this amazing album. It was obvious that the songs come straight from the artist heart and that much love was poured into creating this great mix of music. This talented young artist reminds me of a mix of Elton John and Billy Joel but with his own unique twist. I can't wait to see what comes next. My favorite song was definatly Let It Slide

Impressive Songwriting and Catchy as Hell

The follow-up EP to Spencer's debut "Everybody Has a Song," "Back to School" takes everything that was good about Spencer's earlier work and presents it in a cleaner, poppier (is this a word?) production. Once again, Spencer's songwriting shines through as his biggest asset. The tracks deal with love, sadness, and growing up with a healthy dose of self-depricating humor. Not a bad one in the bunch.
