Spencer Day, at 26, has already had a career worth celebrating. In the few short years he has lived in California, he has appeared on national television four times and performed on both coasts at some of the finest venues in the country. His unique blends of jazz, folk, and contemporary styles continue to appeal to an ever-widening and diverse audience. His velvet baritone voice resonates with grace and range and his original compositions have received wide acclaim from coast to coast.
The Utah native sings with passion and drama yet still manages to convey a dynamic sense of fun and bright improvisation. "Whatever I do, whatever I sing, my primary goal is to keep it pure and honest. When I perform, I want to say thank you to every person listening, and to the universe for letting the power and beauty of music flow through me."
A self-proclaimed perfectionist and workaholic, Day has been singing virtually non-stop over the past few years, and this hard work has finally begun to pay off. In San Francisco, he has headlined at the Plush Room, the Great American Music Hall, and the Herbst Theatre. He is releasing his debut album on the heels of international media attention with his performances in New York, Chicago, and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He has received rave reviews from Back Stage Magazine in New York City, as well as feature articles in the San Francisco Chronicle and other media.
In New York City, Spencer Day has performed to wildly enthusiastic audiences at the legendary Town Hall and at Don't Tell Mama. He was also the headlining performer at the National Earth Day event in Washington, D.C., and in 2003 made his national television debut as a finalist on CBS's Star Search.
Day is an old soul with a young and energetic spirit. From originals to standards, Day combines classic style with a fresh, contemporary, and avant-garde edge. His premier CD includes jazz standards and torch classics like "Blame It on My Youth" by Oscar Levant, Marty Robbins' "Devil Woman," the Gershwin's' "Oh Lady Be Good" and eight evocative and memorable original works.
Largely self-taught, Day has been inspired by a wide range of music, drawing little distinction between styles. He draws from the lush cinematic music of Gershwin as well as the Beatles, sometimes simultaneously. He admires the vulnerability of Chet Baker and Jeff Buckley, and has carefully studied the sublime phrasing and swing of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn. He continues to be inspired by the intricate lyrics and chameleon-like style-changing of Joni Mitchell.
Day finds added inspiration in confessional singer-songwriters such as Fiona Apple and Rufus Wainright. More recently, he has been referred to as the male counterpart to Norah Jones, in part because of his acoustic and organic approach to music making. Day focuses on simple, good music and allows it to breathe and take on its own life. He sings with a passion and intensity that has been described as "smart, inventive and totally solid".
"I want to create a passionate fusion of all the musical styles that have inspired me," Day says. "As I grow as an artist, I hope to continue paying homage to the great artists who have shaped my style and sensibilities. Musically, I hope to create sounds that are smooth and sophisticated but teeming with raw emotion and fire below a seemingly tranquil surface. It is in life's contradictions where the most beautiful things are created."
