Album Notes

As the leader of the band, Spike brings both a family background in music and years of playing experience to the group. His interests in many different genres help inform his own writing and playing styles. Always involved in music, he has played saxophone and piano in several UNT lab bands, sung with Jazz Singers I and the Zebras (performing the music of Stevie Wonder), and leading his own groups such as Rockwell, The Broken Cactus Blues Band, and The Spike Band as well as write hundreds of songs. His favorite artists include Steve Winwood, Miles Davis, Sting, and Stevie Wonder.....and definitely Ray Charles.

Worth the money for 'August Afternoon' alone
author: Ash K
I bought this after hearing ‘August Afternoon’ on another site and still think it’s worth the price of the album for this track alone. It sees the summation of all the best bits that can be found on the rest of the album - a great fundamental groove crafted into an excellent song. There are other standout songs(What’s it Gonna Take, Heaven, Nitty Gritty) and other sections but as a whole it does suffer from production values that don’t complement the strength of the band themselves and I can’t help thinking that if there was more time/money/resources (delete as appropriate) this could be a real contender (Although the raw, ‘one-take’ feel of some parts may appeal to some). Inspite of this top credits have to be given for some truly inspired vocal parts, a standout guitar solo in ‘August Afternoon’ and awesome bass playing throughout. Overall, I guess my feeling is that it’s a 4 star album with 3 star production but with 5 star moments.
