Spiny Norman - Sketches of Pain,
Spiny Norman is the alter ego of Dumbfound drummer Jon Eriksen from Oslo, Norway.
On Sketches he combines the playfulness of techno music with the experimentalism of progressive rock. Spinys love for music shines through in the hectic combinations of different styles and textures, and the music lives in a colourful landscape where detailed rhythmic patterns meet lively joyful melodies sometimes bordering on the naive.
Jon collaborated with programming genius Upland (Jester Records) on the final stages of the record, resulting in a vastly detailed and textured album.
Not keen on limiting himself to the computer only, Spiny Normans songs are performed live in a traditional band structure - guitar, bass, drums and keyboards.
Obvious influences are: Aphex twin, Trans Am, Autechre, Mouse on Mars, Kraftwerk, Stereolab, Lots of Commodore 64 and Amiga composers.
Less obvious influences are: Neu!, Caravan, The Free Design, Sonic Youth and Silver Apples.

Fantastic Outing
author: Rich Vreeland
This album flows like butter! Every track is a true joy and enjoys its own unique qualities which makes this one of the easiest albums to revisit I have heard in a very long time. The production and instrumentations are top notch and the combination of techno, electronica, and prog rock elements are handled flawlessly. Bravo!
