This is the original complete version of POTATOLAND, as envisioned by Randy California and Ed Cassidy circa 1972/1973. While it shares some of the same songs with our other POTATOLAND release from 1981, these are the original versions. The vast majority of the songs have never been officially released in any format. POTATOLAND has been one of the most legendary unreleased recordings of any band until now! Portions of the original POTATOLAND were broadcast by the BBC during SPIRIT's tour of the UK in March/April 1973, creating a large cult following for the album, but it was rejected several times by CBS, and never released. There are two bonus studio tracks from alternate versions of the album that the band tried to get approved by CBS, as well as live tracks originally broadcast by KPFK-FM in LA in Sept. 1972.

Long Time Coming

I met Randy and Ed at a concert in St. Louis. I had recently completed my Spirit record collection with the addition of The Adventures of Kaptain Kopter and Commander Cassidy in Potatoland. When I mentioned how much I liked the album Randy's only response was, "A lot of work went into that." I don't know if he was talking about the music or the effort it took to get someone to release it. I still remember getting the vague impression that he wasn't real pleased with the album for some reason. Now I know why. This CD is what he wanted fans to have. Well Randy, wherever you are. I'll say it again. Potatoland is a great album. I love the Orwellian theme and the comic book alter egos.
This CD is a trip back to a different, more creative time in the American music scene. It is a must have for any Spirit fan.

Holy s#&%! So this is what the Kaptain and Commander had in mind when they originally recorded this album. I really wonder if Epic records would know a good album if they saw one. The version they ultimately released (after MAJOR public outcry) was totally bogus! If that one left you scratching your head like me, you owe it to yourself to set the record straight and hear it in all it's original glory. It's truely sad to think that they were never able to develope these kinds of ideas further because of the rejection from Epic. Shame on you!
