Two women, many ukuleles, tandem journeys …
“Choose Love,” ukulele duo Spirit Runners’ debut album, is a symphony of sonic delight. In times of chaos or despair, the CD reminds us that in any situation we have the opportunity to choose love over fear. Supported by the infectiously joyous sounds of the ukulele, it’s hard not to go there!
Kate McLennan and Noel Tardy birthed Spirit Runners Music as a resource for people facing health challenges and their loved ones. Both cancer survivors, their mutual love of music as a healing modality, and their passion for ukulele music, forged a friendship and a richly diverse musical sound.
The CD predominately features original songs by singer/songwriter Kate McLennan. Her resonant and soulful voice soars through upbeat gospel, blues and jazz stylings into delicate and tender territory with songs about her cancer journey and near-death experience.
Noel’s voice complements Kate’s on harmonies; and Kate’s crooning supports Noel when she takes the lead. Multiple harmonies by both vocalists create a soothing and joyous tapestry of sound.
Noel generates multiple ukulele parts on the album. Her skillful, daring, and playful ukulele style enriches each cut. She also plays bass ukulele on most tracks. The bass ukulele is a relatively new instrument with a unique sound more reminiscent of a stand up bass than an electric bass guitar.
Multi-instrumentalists Kate and Noel consider ukulele their instrument of choice for playing and songwriting. While they primarily play tenor ukulele, the album also features tracks with soprano, baritone-tuned tenor and 8-string ukulele. The sum total is more fun than one could imagine!
