Album Notes

BACKGROUND
Starting on the periphery of the dream pop scene in early 90's Los Angeles, The Sugarplastic had their first breakthrough during a signing binge at DGC (Geffen) Records. Bang, The Earth is Round was released to critical praise in 1996 and despite constant fluctuations in the music business, The Sugarplastic maintain a solid and rabid fan base to this day, and continue to play out and record.

"7X7X7" was originally released on vinyl only. From 2003 through 2004, seven 7" records were released in very limited quantities. The records were on colored vinyl and included two tracks each, one by Ben Eshbach of The Sugarplastic, and the other by Kiara Geller, also of The Sugarplastic.

As time passed, we realized the songs should live on in digital format, so we have compiled them here.

PLEASE NOTE: This cd is professionally produced and manufactured, BUT it is packaged in a simple black and white slip case and there are no liner notes to speak of. This is NOT a cd-r, but to preserve the integrity of the original vinyl project, we kept the cd simple.

Occasionally Transcendent

Another great slice of art-pop from Burbank's finest, The Sugarplastic. 7x7x7 is brilliant: not a bad track on the entire album. The songs are complex and beautifully arranged, the songwriting top-notch (lyrically as well as musically), and they can rock as hard as anyone to boot. Featuring jangly, angular guitars, and lush harmonies, the music is unpredictable & fresh without one second of filler. Here's a band that has synthesized a unique pop formula: sweet, offbeat & occasionally transcendent.

A music nerd like me could get excited about all the rhythmic play, noticing how if you consistenly keep a 2:3 beat going, these guys manage to dodge and dart between the beats yet always land smack dab in the same groove. But you don't have to be enthralled by cool rhythmic modulations and gymnastics to appreciate The Sugarplastic. Let's just say that as fun and entertaining as it might be, there's a helluva lot going on under those spunky hooks, those catchy as heck guitar lines, those brilliant choruses. It's jaw dropping how much ingenius they can pack into one song. It's sort of like visual art that you just really can't entirely appreciate in one looking- you just know it's damn good. From hints of the 60s to emo rock of today, 7X7X7 will keep you entranced the whole way through.
