Splendour And Misery features both new material from established artists such as Bad Seed James Johnston and emerging young bands like Revenge Of Shinobi and Hotel Hotel - part of a fast growing underground movement who are extending the boundaries of a sonic terrain first explored by Can, Godspeed You Black Emperor and The Dirty Three.

Splendour And Misery also features a live version of the ...Bender track Laugh With Me, recorded when they supported Mercury Rev at Hammersmith Apollo. Rockets by the heavily tipped Kentucky band Your Black Star who toured with The New Pornographers last year, an alternative version of Been Hit by legendary photographer and ...Bender front man Steve Gullick, and an exclusive track by the acclaimed Secretly Canadian band Early Day Miners.

This lavish double compilation album is indeed both splendid and melancholic, from the shimmering cinematic melodies of Early Day Miners and Moly, through the minimal folkish fragility of Tenebrous, Salter Cane and Shiny Around The Edges. Splendour And Misery is a journey from heartache to redemption.

From the explosive rage of Coldharbor’s thundering Nirvana riffs through the sparkling ‘80’s guitar pop of hArtley and the desolate open spaces of James Johnston’s and Ari’s haunting soundscapes. This is a celebration of hope over despair, be it the chiming guitars of Your Black Star or Breathless’ interstellar anthems - A truly cathartic experience.
