Popazoidii features the orignal lineup: guitarist Randy Brumley, bassist Dart Steed, drummer Mick lewis and keyboardist Michael Steed.
The punchy “Open The Window” immediately jumps off the laser beam, showcasing Michael Steed's singing and songwriting capabilities. With straight-ahead execution and a grooving chorus, “Frequency” offers an almost-Enoesque experience with a cocktail lounge groove that disintegrates into a shredding radio scramble.
“Fly Away” is also a fine rocker, both pensive and relaxing in an oddly escapist style. The Beatles-flavored “Bet You Didn't Know” and “Down” are outstanding examples of the focused songwriting with overdubbed reverberating guitars that build a wall of sound on seamless bass lines and a solid rythmic foundation.
A stark and barren “Go On Home” sounds almost as if some tracks had been stripped bare; perhaps allowing an open melodic atmosphere for Sarah Wagner's brief but haunting background vocal cameo. The sparse lyrics of isolation and uncertainty weave curiously through a lonely chord progression of slide guitars and creeping keyboards.
“Enthusiasm V1.0.2” is a memorable chestnut from the 80's. This updated revision of a burning rocker that hundreds of Tulsans have cut a rug to in the strangest venues. It remains an anthem of celebration and abandon; resurrected with 21st century distortion- and cranking up the tempo a notch or two.
