Album Notes

Strange Rebel Frequency is a recently formed musical collective based in California, that plays a stripped down, heartfelt, acoustic-based alternative or "Americana" type of music with a slow, melancholic element. The brainchild of singer/songwriter David M Cross, they have been compared to artists such as Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits, Nick Cave, and even Bruce Springsteen, as well as contemporary Americana/indie artists like Wilco, Iron & Wine, and Will Oldham. They have very strong songs, a unique identity and vision, and are a powerful and emotive live experience. Their music could have a very wide appeal...

Their new CD "House of Four & Hearts" is full of rough, raw emotions, ruminations on the timeless subjects of love, lust, death and loss. Maree T's haunting voice echoes behind David's brooding baritone on half the tunes, giving a sweetness to the sour.

A pleasant surprise

These guys found me on MySpace, based on my artist preferences (heavy on Nick Cave, Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and Swans/Angels of Light), and I gave some tracks from this CD a listen. I was blown away by the fact that THEY found ME. If your tastes run in a similar vein, buy this CD. Play it in your car, play it while you write, play it on the subway... you'll see what I mean. Real, raw talent here.

Strange rebel Frequency are a group which set up itself rather recently in California and with House of Four & Hearts makes their debut. With such a group name you expect no easily digestible numbers and that proves to be true. In a slow tempo the five members - in virtually acoustic setting - bring stripped songs, which bring to mind Mark Lanegan and sometimes Chris and Carla (Walkabouts), to the bone, but have by far outdone them with House. Dejected, ominous and very monotonous, this slow-core CD is just forty minutes. Briefly and to the point: they provide a strong sense of more terrible trouble. Unless you find lines such as "Where are the suicide girls that I once knew," however, comic.
