ABOUT THIS ALBUM

Album Notes
Born in Edmonton, in 1971, I was raised on a small farm in Sooke, B.C. Since the beginning, I remember music, and my fascination with it. As children, my two brothers and I took guitar lessons, even before our hands were big enough to reach all the strings. A distinct memory is coming home from school one day to find that Mom and Dad had bought my brothers and me our own guitars! As kids our music was for our own personal enjoyment, playing for family and friends.

If I'm not working, I'm playing the guitar and singing! Most of my live performances are around campfires....

Music has very much been my number one favorite pastime throughout the years, and has given me many hours of enjoyment. My intention is to try and give that same enjoyment to others - If a song can find a way to your heart, put a smile on your face, or just brighten your day in some way, my goal has been reached!

Sooke News Mirror 08/07/2002

On his debut album Taylor delivers nine heartfelt, moving songs....
Some musicians try to create a truly personal album. Former Sooke resident Shawn Taylor has seemingly accomplished it.

Though not all of Blue Sky Day’s lyrics are about Taylor, there is not a part of the recently released compact disc that he hasn’t had a hand in creating. The Shawnigan Lake engineer wrote and sang every song and played every instrument as he recorded the album on a computer in his home office.

As a one-man band, Taylor had to tackle problems by himself throughout the process.

“I was trying to sing into the microphone with one hand on the microphone and the other on the mouse,” he said.

As a true solo artist, Taylor also had to grapple with the idea of whether anyone outside his office walls would like to listen to his work.

“I’d finish recording a song and say, ‘Is this any good?’”

Taylor eventually decided to pursue a career in engineering, but he still loves music.

“It is still a strong driving force for me,” he said. “I’d like to put more time into writing and producing.”

On his debut album Taylor delivers nine heartfelt, moving songs that would likely fall into the radio programming niche of country. However, Taylor admits to having influences as diverse as Radiohead and ABBA.

But upon first listen, I felt his work was more like that of John Denver. He seems to have a story to tell and has a gift for telling it.

A thoroughly well-crafted album
(Fiercely) independent recording artist Shawn R. Taylor's debut album, Blue Sky Day, is a collection of deeply thoughtful and introspective songs, which also happen to be toe-tappingly enjoyable.
