The Second Vatican Council declared that “the musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art.” The Council fathers then commanded that “the treasure of sacred musicâ¦be preserved and fostered with very great care.” The Church of St. Agnes, located near Grand Central Terminal in midtown Manhattan, has for many years been prominent in the effort to obey the Council's orders.
The “Tridentine” Latin Mass is celebrated every Sunday, with music provided by some of New York City's finest professional musicians. This CD offers a sample of the rich variety of music offered at St. Agnes. Since the selections on the CD are from “live” recordings there are inevitably occasional flaws, as well as background noises ranging from Sanctus bells to crying babies. These imperfections are retained as evidence that the Latin Mass, far from being a museum or a concert hall, is in fact a vital part of an active parish.

Very worthwhile, and in a good way, not professional
author: Most Rev. Alan J Munday - Anglo-Orthodox Church, UK
I am enjoying this recording very much. Unlike some recordings this one is not a sterile studio production. But one in which real worshippers are putting their hearts and souls into worship of God, (even if I think some of them might have kept their children a bit quieter in a couple of the tracks, though this does not distract too much, some might even like the homey feel that it gives). They use the timeless words and music of Gregorian chant, tastefully interwoven with music derived from it, with just a little bit of organ music to start and end the CD.
