Stain of Mind can be traced back to a suburban basement in 1997 where guitarist Tony Caraffa and bassist Adam Dion hooked up with Ryan Hill, the original drummer. The addition of Igal Kaplun as a second guitarist in 1998 created a four piece that went through countless singers until Matt Goldstein joined the group in 2000. This original line-up worked together for two years playing the St. Louis scene including an appearance in then Extreme radio's Monday Night Metal Competition.
Their first EP, self titled, was released in March of 2001 through Sane Records Production Company which featured six original tracks from the past two years. However shortly thereafter drummer Ryan Hill left the band to pursue other musical interests, and Igal Kaplan left for college in Michigan. Determined to keep their dreams alive Tony, Matt, and Adam spent six months searching for a replacement.
Tony was contacted by Brain Wakefield, former drummer of St. Louis band Mindshaft (RIP) in September of 2001, and after a short audition became the new drummer. Brian instantly brought new life to the band that was struggling to stay together while in college. The new musical inspiration quickly created three new songs and a renewed passion. The band began playing shows again in January of 2002 with there new 4 piece lineup, and are currently enjoying there newfound creativity.
Stain of Mind began as a Metallica cover band in Ryan's basement but has progressed musically throughout the years. Their wide range of influences from jazz to hardcore create a unique blend of aggression and melody. While their early stuff reflected a straight fore ward rapcore approach, their new movement is towards progressive mixes of melodic progression and thematic development, all intending to affect your emotions.
