oul singer extraordinaire Stan Mosley is a contender for the Soul-Blues throne vacated by Johnnie Taylor and Tyrone Davis. Mosley is back with his best album yet entitled "Man Up", which promises to be the "Southern Soul" disc of 2008.
Mosley began singing in 1969 and joined the Sharpees in 1974. The band ended up backing the diva Shirley Brown and Stan sometimes sang backup. From there he began gigging around Chicago off and on for years but had yet to be signed let alone release a record. Due to his old school voice and dynamic live show his acclaim grew and, for two years running, he captured the Chicago Music Award (in 1982 and 1983) for Best Male R & B Vocalist.
By 1986 Mosley was temporarily fed up with the music business and joined a music ministry known as 'The Company' in Chicago. But he came back in 1992 and returned to East St. Louis and teamed up with Gus Thornton and wrote several songs. These were released as the collector's EP "Standing Tall". (Butler Records re-issued it on CD in 1995). During this time he was touring as the opening act for Cicero Blake and serving as Blake's driver and valet. In 1997, he found Malaco Records and dropped his first full LP, appropriately titled "Soul Singer". Mosley and Malaco crafted two more strong albums that should've catapulted Stan to Soul Brother #1 in the Southern Soul/Soul Blues world.
Mosley next headed to Mardi Gras Records for a one-off project before finding himself on the independent level in 2006, releasing the critically acclaimed "Steppin' Out" (which incorporated the EP "Standing Tall" with all new tracks).
In early 2008 Stan is ready to "Man Up" and dominate the Southern Soul world with his catchiest set of tunes yet. Look out!

"I Came To Party" is a great opening track on this CD and really sets the tone for the rest of the CD.
If you've ever heard the old saying "less is more", then here is the perfect example. Not too much,... but just enough !
Mr. Mosley's semi-gritty voice adds just the right amount of flavor to his sound.
This is what soul-blues music used to sound like and it is very enjoyable to hear it again.
I would recommend this CD to anyone with ears !

We've always been fans of Stan's music here at City Sounds Radio. I think he's at the top of his game with this cd. It's really hard to pick a favorite track because the whole cd is good. All I can say is .... true lovers of soul blues don't want to be without this album. The album is currently #6 on the Blues Critic charts and will definitely be #1 in your collection.
