Album Notes

CITY PRISON DOORS is the third track to be taken from the band's recent debut album 'Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre' and the first to receive a commercial release in Australia.

How queer? The band are told they combine two influences they barely knew they had to breathe new life into a movement that happened over two decades ago.

'...think Elvis Costello fronting The Jam. City Prison Doors comes as close to joyously re-creating late 1970's new wave as you're likely to find.' - InPress

Unintentional? Maybe, but who's complaining? Like previous radio singles SATURDAY NIGHT, SUNDAY MORNING and GIRL TALK, City Prison Doors combines the four-piece's pop smarts with the urgency and excitement of live rock'n'roll. As with nearly all songs on the album producer Rob Younger (Radio Birdman) insisted the original live guide track be kept as the master take with only the vocals and later some Hammond organ overdubbed to ensure the energy the band were trying to capture on their 2 inch tape machine was not lost.

As well as the lead track the single contains a live EP with 4 songs from Starky's recent appearance on Triple J's Live At The Wireless, including a version of 'Show a Sign of Life', a song by one of the groups favourite bands Brooklyn's 'The High Strung' that was not originally broadcast in the LATW performance.

Since the release of 'Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre' in late 2003 Starky have been touring consistently including shows with The Vines, The Shins, The Modey Lemon, The Soledad Brothers, The Revs and The Casanovas.

Starky are currently writing and demoing material for their second album which is expected to be released in early 2005.

'Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre' was my favorite CD of 2003 and this EP will allow additional Starky numbers to grace your CD player. The live versions and the cover song are great! Influences seem to be The Jam, early Elvis Costello, and Teenage Fanclub. Looking forward to the next Starky long player. :)
