Album Notes

"American Oddity", the 2nd full-length release from Brooklyn, New York's Stars of Stage and Screen, picks up where 2002's "Dying to Meet You" left off. Beautiful songwriting, fuzzed out guitars, analog synths, gorgeous harmonies and the usual eclectic mix of beats and live instruments make this record a must have for fans of dreampop, shoegaze and just plain ol' rock 'n' roll.

Stars of Stage and Screen formed in 1999 as a collaborative recording project based in a small apartment, then in the East Village. Timothy Roven and Daughtry Carstarphen share all bandly duties - guitars, bass, vocals, synthesizers, programming, recording, removing the jingling collar from the dog during vocal takes and making the occaisional tea or cocktail - whichever the moment dictates.

Now all recording (and living for that matter) is done in Brooklyn, in a bigger studio, constructed - deconstructed - and then reconstructed by Stars of Stage and Screen. Mastering of both records "Dying to Meet You" and "American Oddity" was done by Brent Lambert at Kitchen Mastering in Carrboro, NC. If you think the records sound great (and they do!) it's because of him. seriously. We'd like to thank Tom Maxwell and Ken Mosher - formerly of Squirrel Nut Zippers for adding additional drums to one of our tracks ("destroyer) and also to Akin Fernandez of ~irdial discs whose excellent and hypnotic "Conet Project" was used as a sample in another track ("circles").

Please have a listen to the samples of the tracks on this page or visit us at www.starsnyc.net where you can hear the entire CD online.

Stars of Stage and Screen have appeared on compilation albums for Garageband.com-Alternative, Garageband.com-Electronic, Blisscent II, Radiovista, and IndieMedia. Stars of Stage and Screen have done remixes for My Favorite, Carol Masters and The Lamps. Send us an email at info@starsnyc.net

After some random searching on CDBaby, i somehow stumbled on this CD by Stars of Stage and Screen. I'm not sure why i bought it (10 bucks maybe? who knows.) but i'm glad i did. from the opening sounds of the introduction to the deceptive calm of circles i was entranced from beginning to end. The arrangements are fresh, the sounds are unique and the voices are captivating. This CD veers between blissed out shoegazer, alternative (the good kind) rock, and psychedelia. Even the Wham! cover (which made me roll my eyes when i noticed it on the track list) gets such a unique treatment that i now love it and play it for all my friends. I haven't purchased their other CD yet but i'm thinking next time i find 10 bucks in my couch, this is the first place it's going to go.
