Early on in time, music was played simply for the reasons of expression and enjoyment. It is these same reasons that brought The Steepwater Band together, and their relentless dedication continues to allow them to spread their music throughout Chicagoland and the Midwest. Hailing from the south side of Chicago, The Steepwater Band combines hard driving Delta blues, roots-based psychedelic rock, backwoods whiskey slammin' country music, and a whole lot of soul, to create their own brand of rock n' roll.
Formed in early 1998, The Steepwater Band cut their teeth jamming, and living together in a house just outside of the city, and quickly headed for the clubs. Since then, their uncompromising sound has kept them gigging steadily, including performances at the 2000 & 2001 Chicago Blues Festivals, and opening slots for Virgin recording artist Cracker, Chicago blues legend Buddy Guy, and outlaw-country legend David Allan Coe, to name a few. Most recently, the group has been seen jamming around town in front of capacity crowds, at such notable Chicago venues as Metro, Double Door, The Hideout, Wise-Fools Pub, and Buddy Guy's Legends.
This quartet of young and hungry musicians is led by the stellar talents of Chicago natives Jeff Massey on lead guitar and lead vocals, and Michael Connelly on lead vocals, harmonica, guitar, and percussion. Joining them are Tod Bowers on bass, and Joseph Winters on drums - a tight rhythm section that has been playing together in different bands for over ten years. Together, The Steepwater Band uses its collective talent and imagination to write songs, and arrange original versions of classics written by artists in whom they take inspiration. Now, with the release of their independently produced full length CD, "Brother to the Snake", The Steepwater Band has received airplay from several FM radio stations across the Midwest (including WXRT Radio Chicago 93.1FM), and acclamation from critics and fans alike.
The Steepwater Band continues on their musical journey, and looks forward to a future of traveling, performing, and recording for many years to come...
