A breakup record, Clean is a mighty fine one, introspective and moving. Most of Steinhart's songs are catchy, delivered in his unique voice, complemented by simple yet effective instrumentation, including the occasional vibes or crying trumpet. What becomes apparent after a while is that Steinhart has forgone the traditional rock and roll format in favor of a rich, quasi-EZ sound one usually finds with th likes of St. Etienne, which is to Clean's enormous benefit.

David Steinhart Clean (Stonegarden)
reviewed in issue #214, 4/2/01
Now, there's no more room for subterfuge. David Steinhart, the main songwriter behind Pop Art and the driving force behind Smart Brown Handbag, has finally recorded a "solo" album.
Of course, the songs here sound more than a little like those that Steinhart penned for and played with those two bands. Only makes sense, when you think about it. And so I have to listen to a set of sparkling, smart and, well, clean pop songs.
By clean, I mean that Steinhart doesn't clutter either his lyrics or his melodies. The lines are straight and pretty (hardly stark). Very few people can write songs like Steinhart, and this album is at least as good as any other collection of his I've heard.
I use the pronoun there advisedly. Yes, Steinhart came into his own as an artist a long time ago. He has finally decided to put his name above the title. The results are similar to previous efforts. Steinhart, quite simply, is a master at the pop form. All I can do is revel in the beauty.

My Boss
author: Tony Molina
I just want to say im very proud to say... David Steinhart use to be my boss back in the 90's. I worked in his company and supported all the technical portion of the company. Anyway, not only was he a great person to work for but hes also a great artist! He use to have a studio in his work place where he would practice with his band... maybe still does not sure. I always knew he would go far. His music is outstanding! Cheers!

Glue Magazine Review of "Clean"
author: Glue Mazagine
I love pop. I love melodies. I don't want to hear about your child abuse. So thank Christ for David Steinhart, who makes great pop, not crap-radio pop. Remember great pop? Lulling melodies, dulcet voices sans sweetening? "Clean" is just what it claims to be, stripped-down, thoughtful pop that never gets coy. When he sings "This is just a sad love song," he's backed by an optimistic Burt Bacharach-style vibraphone that belies his claim. Steinhart's sensitive-guy approach and his experiences on both ends of breakups give you songs to identiy with no matter where you are in your love life. If you're wondering what happened to Steinhart's last band, Smart Brown Handbag, he explains it on the short 'n' sweet opening track, whose chorus goes, "Not so smart arter all." But it's devoid of bitterness; in fact, the whole CD resonates with the feeling you get when you get over someone faster than you expected to.
