Album Notes

In the Silence of the Snowfall

American Jazz vocalist Stephanie K. serves up a cocktail of winter evergreens and traditional holiday classics, this time remaining on the east side of the pond. Long time colleague Jürgen Knautz custom penned arrangements for string quartet, jazz ensemble, and voice. Included in this mix are also a work by contemporary composer Patricia Barber and the title track, written by Stephanie K.
From warm and cheerful Bossa vibes to melancholy Blues, and contemplative Jazz Ballads, this recording offers something for every winter mood. Violinist Christine Rudolf and cellist Tobias Köhler interweave a classic feeling throughout songs that are complemented by the accompaniment and solos of Peter Kräubig (piano), Christian Kappe (trumpet), Klaus Dapper (sax), and Matthias Fleige (guitar). Bassist Jürgen Knautz and drummer Jan Freund keep the whole project honest in the tradition of jazz. This tapestry of sound allows Stephanie K. complete freedom to reveal her multi-facetted vocal and phrasing abilities. She is at times soft and inviting, then sassy and enticing, and other times fragile and innocent. A special highlight is the playful duet with vocal virtuoso Richie Alexander.
Pour yourself a glass of red wine or egg nog, have a seat in front of the fire, and enjoy!

Editor's Pick - Very nice!

With a backing band of both a string quartet and a jazz sextet, this album from jazz vocalist Stephanie K. provides unique versions of holiday-centric songs which have a classic sound, aided by modern recording techniques. Her sultry, powerful vocals coupled with the combination of strings and jazz band make this album really unique, like on “The Snow is Falling,” which takes what could be a fairly standard sounding blues number and it turns into something much more sophisticated and still mournful, thanks to the doubled cello and violin parts. Meanwhile, the title track is a wonderfully modern jazz track, with drummer Jan Freund taking a nicely percussive, sparse approach, while Vince Guaraldi’s holiday classic “Christmas Time is Here” gets the bossa nova treatment, pleasantly echoing Pink Martini’s multi-instrumental approach to lounge jazz.
