Tenor saxophonist, flutist, and composer Andrew Sterman first appeared playing in some of the best big bands around, those of Buddy Rich, Louis Bellson, Gil Evans, Toshiko Akiyoshi and many others. Always a fan of the great jazz singers, very early in his career he played with many of the all time greats, including Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Mel Torme, Aretha Franklin and scores of other famous names. Audiences have heard him with Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Wallace Roney, Roland Hanna, as well as many other jazz artists and a large variety of classical and new music ensembles.
Pursuing his wide interests in many kinds of living music, Mr Sterman joined the Philip Glass Ensemble in 1991, beginning an ongoing association with Philip Glass, with whom he tours around the world. He is heavily featured on Glass's latest CD release, Philip Glass: Saxophone. With small jazz and improvisation groups Andrew Sterman has appeared regularly at clubs in NYC and the Kennedy Center in Washington. His new set of intimate and powerful jazz pieces for small group which he has been developing as his private music for many years is now released; Blue Circle With Spiral, featuring Fred Hersch and Rashied Ali.
