Steve Connolly is a Massachusetts native raised in a very urban housing project who writes music which sounds like John Lennon somehow re-interpreted traditional country for an urban setting. Connolly finds new ways to inject rockabilly pizzaz into lazy, folksy melodies. In many ways his broad understanding of the musical performances of Elvis Presley have given him the courage to "sex" tunes up which otherwise might lie sleepily in the Americana tradition. As a songwriter/lyricist, the death in childhood of three brothers from Leukemia gave him the motivation to cast a more critical gaze on easy pop-rock tunes or even sugary country standards. Always resistant to an easy assimilation, Steve can even blast an ambient "Cold Play/ U2" wind into a melody which could easily get the anthematic country treatment ( "Cold, Sunny Afternoon" ). Wondering about the Lennon connection? Give "Frogs in her Hair" a listen; for a different approach to the rockabilly of Presley try "Hurtin Man".

A male Lucinda Williams - Tonal purity and lyrical gottcha

Lyrically there is a level of detail to all of the songs that made me laugh or cry more than i thought i was capable. Musically the melodies are not overwrought and the instruments sound like instruments. The guitars sound so pure and clean. I love it.
