"Jazz Life" represents one night in the life of a working jazz trio. It is a "live" recording. There are no edits or tweaks. What you hear is what we played on June 10, 2010 at Cleopatra's Needle in New York City. We hope you enjoy our efforts.
Steve Elmer (Piano/Composer)
Hide Tanaka (Bass)
Shingo Okudaira (Drums)
The Steve Elmer Trio began playing together in 2005. Our first CD was recorded in 2006 and is called "I Used To Be Anonymous." In 2007 we spent three weeks performing all over Japan. We recorded "Fire Down Below," our second CD, in 2008. "Jazz Life" is our first live recording.
All of our CDs feature original Steve Elmer compositions and straight ahead jazz solos. We like to call this Classic Jazz: play the melody, improvise, tell a story, and make it swing.
Here's a sample of what some reviewers have said about The Steve Elmer Trio:
"This well oiled trio plays with a sense of space. They swing at all tempos. Their joy is palpable. I look forward to their next recording." -- Jazz Improv Magazine
"I am usually wary of albums of originals, especially by players that I do not know. Well, here is a collection of originals that is wonderfully ear-catching. Elmer has swing in his blood and his compatriots are cut from the same cloth. It is always nice to find a new artist to enjoy, and such is the case with Steve Elmer." -- Jersey Jazz Magazine
"The music is gorgeous. Each song is treated like the only song and you get wrapped up in each one like it's a novel you don't want to put down. Even without lyrics you can feel the story behind the music." -- BlogCritics.Org
"Elmer's compositions have a comforting sense of direction, and his compatriots execute with such polished presence that the finished product is both enjoyable and passionate." -- Jazz.Com
"This trio of Elmer, Okudaira and bassist Hide Tanaka has got a ton of energy and they use it to the fullest to the listener’s delight. Elmer’s musical heart is in the right place." -- All About Jazz, LA/Bay Area
