Album Notes

Stephen’s latest recording is entitled Shine, and features some of New York’s
finest including Claire Daly, James Zollar, Marcus Rojas, Oscar Noriega, vocalist Peter Eldridge, and many others. The album of seven originals has through composed works as well as pieces that highlight Stephen's love for melody and groove, such as the title track song, Shine.

Steve Hudson is a New York based pianist/composer whose eclectic musical style can be heard in a number of jazz, chamber music, and folk music projects. His compositions and piano style embrace the history of jazz, blues, and modern classical music, all with a free spirited love of improvisation.

In 2008 Hudson was featured in Mark Dejong's recording "The Unknown" which spent 13 weeks in the top 10, and two weeks at #1, in 2008 on the Canadian jazz charts. Stephen is also cofounder of the Outer Bridge Ensemble, a collective of musicians whose experimental yet groove oriented works are featured in the recordings Seamless and The Outer Bridge. The group has performed and recorded with a number of special guests including trumpeter Steven Bernstein.

Hudson was largely self taught, and learned the instrument by ear and by playing along with Ray Charles and Lou Rawls' records. In his early twenties he met the pianist Barry Harris who introduced Stephen to the world of bebop. Years later he refined his sound in his piano studies with Stanley Cowell, Garry Dial, and Kenny Barron.
