Steve's writing ranges from modal tales of mistaken identity such as "Travellin' Through" to the tongue-in-cheek social commentary of "Rural Methlab Blues" as he scans the interstate landscape for strange American characters.

Album Notes

Steve Kaul - Acoustic Guitar, Resophonic Guitar & Vocal

Steve sings and performs with Martin acoustic and Amistar single cone, tricone & tenor resonator guitars. He plays and sings traditional folk, rapid-fire fingerstyle country blues and his own songs with an intense energy. He has performed for over 18 years in the midwest and has played selected shows on the west coast and Europe, including perfomances and workshops at the Minnesota Resophonic Guitar Festival and the Northeast Folk Festival.
Using a variety of open tunings Steve draws inspiration from the old guitar masters such as John Hurt and Reverend Gary Davis and modern fingerstyle gurus like John Fahey and Leo Kottke. His songwriting is stongly influenced by Dylan, Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen and Warren Zevon.
Steve began playing the guitar at age 9. He played his first professional solo show in a coffee house in 1985 and continued to hone his skills while completing a degree in English. In 1989, he moved to the Twin Cities with his band and for the next eight years he explored acoustic and electric guitar with groups playing jazz, rock, hip hop and blues - earning some Minnesota Music Awards in the process.
In 1994 he formed the Americana trio - the New Grass Heads with engineer Leo Whitebird and indie rocker Mike Gemberling. Their 1996 release 'Lost Episodes' garnered critical acclaim and helped launch the label Dream Horse Records.
Steve is working solo again. He released his debut cd - 'Utah Sun' - locally Oct 15 and looks forward to a wider release Dec 15th.

...propulsive guitar work... A nice, down-to-earth folk effort.
author: SING OUT FOLK MAGAZINE / SPRING 2005
Steve Kaul's propulsive guitar work drives his songs forward on Utah Sun, laying down the perfect backdrop for stories about broken-down cars ("Dynaflow") and the open road ("Travelin' Through"). Kaul has a knack for decorating his original songs with the right blues or folk lick, and for making simple arrangements sound full--one man, one guitar. A nice, down-to-earth folk effort.

Very good !
author: RADIOCENTRAAL-BELGIUM / WINTER 2004
The guitar style (Acoustic Guitar, Resophonic Guitar) shows a nice mixture of blues, mixed with influences of some American folk style traditions, finger-picking and flat-picking, played pretty past. Especially the fingerpicking with its traditional foundations was influenced by beside people like John Hurt, Reverend Gary Davis, by John Fahey and Leo Kottke, perhaps for it's arranged fast playing and inspiration of older styles into something fresh. Very good ! ****

...his delivery as a vocalist as well as fingerpicking and flatpicking guitarist
author: INTERNATIONAL GUITAR SEMINAR - FALL 2004
Equipped with only his voice and guitar, he delivers his songs with soul and dedication. All in all, I felt his songwriting is of a very high standard and his delivery as a vocalist as well as fingerpicking and flatpicking guitarist is top notch.
