Album Notes

Sticks Downey's debut album is a chewed-up turnbuckle with the tension-adjusting bolts exposed; a perfect place to get your head cracked wide open.

These are songs about wrestling, baseball before the strike of 1994, high-stakes gambling, tattered band t-shirts, iced black coffee at two in the morning, Metal Mania marathons, foreign objects, game show hosts, local landmarks, Nike sneakers from 1989, and being better than you at things.

Wockenfuss makes the beats and raps the raps.

Foots sings the hooks.

Talik plays the bass.

You take a boot to the neck when you're outside the ring with your face pressed against the cold concrete of the gymnasium floor.

This is a fantastic album - loved it to begin with and it's grown on me since! Heard "These Monitors Are Frigid" on the 'Hipster, Please!' podcast (http://www.hipsterplease.com/2009/04/radio-free-hipster-ep-65-no-foolin.html) and after the beat got stuck in my head for days afterwards I realised I had to check out more of their stuff. Picked up the album here on CDBaby and it's been on regular rotation ever since... The lyrics are excellent, and packed tight with pop culture references, both geeky and mainstream. They're delivered masterfully, honed into quick, fresh and varied rhythms which perfectly complement the beats underneath. Did I mention the beats? Wonderful variety of orchestrations, drawing on instruments, effects, and vocal snippets to create truly compelling backing for Wockenfuss's rapping. You've got preview samples right up above, check them out, then grab the album. I recommend: 'These Monitors Are Frigid' 'Paper Champion' 'Sticks of Butter' and 'End The Scene' to get a taste of the goodness that awaits you...
