Album Notes

"Jamie Stillway is a genre bender who makes you wonder what is in the Portland rain that makes this town rip...inventive, intimate, intimidating - if you dare to try it, it's quite simply wonderful."
-minor7th.com

"At times sounding like Bill Frisell, and at times like Leo Kottke...Jamie Stillway is a young guitarist with all her chops in order."
-Sing Out! Magazine

After a one year incubation period, the sophomore release from Jamie Stillway has finally surfaced. "Winter Rings" prominently features the first incarnation of the Jamie Stillway Trio, which consists of upright bassist Tim Renner and drummer Sean Moultrie. The album also highlights the work of some of Stillway's musical compatriots, including accordionist Courtney Von Drehle of 3 Leg Torso, and alto saxophonist Lesley Kernochan of Vagabond Opera. From banjo imitations to soundtracks inspired by poor dining experiences, this album shows the seemingly endless range of Stillway's compositional abilities.

REVIEWS

Great work with the trio, but I like solo Stillway better!
author: Tobyn Smith
I absolutely loved Jamie Stillway's first album, Mell of a Hess, so buying this one was a no-brainer. I'm a tiny bit disappointed in this one, but only because the first was so amazing! Winter Rings features the Jamie Stillway Trio, with less of Stillway by herself. The trio makes some fun, toe-tapping music that showcases Stillway's impressive prowess on the guitar. However, the rich solo work that I loved so much on her first album is barely present on this one. Her only solo song on here is the title track, Winter Rings, and while it is quite lovely indeed, I'm greedy and I want more! Overall, this is a great album that I highly recommend, but if you don't have her first album, grab that and THEN get this one. They're both worth having.
