We only ever do this song when Jo’s with us. We get her when farm, kids and life permits. It’s still 6 hours drive from the inland to Sydney.
She had some errand to run in Sydney and had the afternoon free. It gave me a chance to book some studio time and finish the middle 8 for the song we recorded in Indy.
Rosie made me warn her the night before; if we had time left over, I’d like to give the Crosby Stills & Nash tune a go.
That’s Jo’s rule. No surprises. 24 hours warning.
No ‘Michael-spur-of-the-moment-ambush-creativity’. I like that. Ambush creativity.
We recorded it, all together, running a half and half mike/line for the acoustic guitar, with Jo and I side by side at different mikes. Pretty much the way we do it on stage.
Jo does all the heavy lifting. Rosie’s almost invisibly flawless and I get the easy melody vocal. Even if we had the want to be, it’s not perfect. It’s the three of us, playing something we love playing, together. I think that’s what the song’s about.
