Album Notes

"Strange Land are a three piece who certainly like to make a lot of noise with their cerebral progressive rock/metal ... well, I said noise? Yes, but I meant it in a good way, as the Wisconsin-based band pays a lot of attention also to melody, not only to the complexity of guitar riffs." - Igor Italiani, progressiveworld.net

As with many original bands the sound of Strange Land is difficult to describe. In the most generic sense the band falls into the progressive rock/metal category, along with such bands as Fates Warning, Savatage, Rush, Zero Hour, Pain of Salvation, and Galactic Cowboys. Strange Land, however, prefers not to wear its influences on its sleeve. Rather, the members blend all of their past experiences and outside musical influences into one unique musical vision. Each member of Strange Land takes an equal part in the writing and arranging of its music.

Strange Land was established in November of 1998 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin joining together former members of Labyrinth and Fishboy. The group was united to write and perform their brand of original neo-progressive metal. The members of Strange Land currently include Chad Novell on bass, keyboards and vocals, (former member of Labyrinth, May 1993 - November 1998), Sean Gill on guitar (former member of Fishboy, May 1993 - June 1995), and returning member Brad Klotz on drums.

Within the first six months of its existence, Strange Land had written and arranged eleven original songs, four of which appeared on the Foundation demo, whose title track reached #12 on MP3.com's progressive metal chart. Gabor Kleinbloesem of Strutter Magazine said of Foundation: "Some more of these catchy and progressive tunes and this Strange Land may be counted as one of the latest sensations from the USA."

The band has self-released its first full-length album, Anomaly, with 12 tracks and almost 70 minutes of material. Blaming Season is the band's second full cd, recorded with former member Eteban Gonzalez
Strange Land has performed with fellow prog/metal acts Leviathin Recording Artist Joe Stump, Quark Quintet, Ka, and Battlestar Cadillactica.

You wouldn’t expect an insanely talented progressive metal band to hail from Milwaukee, would you? Why? I don’t know. You just wouldn’t. I mean c’mon, the city is great and all (so sue me, I have a soft spot for the Brewers), but it’s not exactly known as a metal hotbed. Plus, if you’ve been there, it doesn’t strike you as a prog-metal type city. Anyway, Milwaukee is exactly where Strange Land is from, and BLAMING SEASON is indeed a display of greatly talented musicians. Borrowing influences from the more “brainy” prog-metal bands such as Fates Warning, Dream Theater, Enchant, and especially Zero Hour, Strange Land concoct songs that are as dense as they are lengthy. Though they may seem deliberately obtuse at first (let’s face it, song titles like “Obliquity” and “Cause and Defect” have a certain egghead quality to them), the 8 songs offered on this disc eventually win you over with their hidden hooks and overall grooviness. It reminds me of walking into a labyrinth: at first you’re completely lost, but once you find your way, there is a perverse enjoyment in the journey. Things really begin to open up when the band takes pity on you and throws out the insanely catchy chorus of “Alone We Go”. If you’re the kind of metal listener that can take and album like Zero Hour’s THE TOWERS OF AVARICE and put it on for enjoyment, you will find much to love within BLAMING SEASON. Strange Land is a gifted group that is destined for big things.

This is a great cd! I've seen other reviews that say its all over the place or that the band needs to pick a style. Nonsense! Every song here is an adventure. Heavy, melodic and engaging, I recommend this especially to fans of Zero Hour, Fates Warning and King's X.

Personally, I like this band quite a lot. This CD, their second, is definitely on my recommended list along with their first release "Anomaly". If you enjoy bands like Fates Warning, Kings X, Rush, Dream Theater, etc - then you will certainly want to add this band to your collection.
